"STOP at 7" campaign

8 is too much...
7 is just nice...
9 is OVERKILL...

I'm referring to the working hours of some industries in Singapore with exclusion of the manufacturing and operation division.

Following the implementation of the 5-day work week, I will like to propose the 7-hours work day for most of the industry in Singapore with the following reason as my support.

Reasons:
1) Long working hours does not necessarily reflects productivity
Most company believe that the longer you work, the more you produce, the more the company earn. However, this might not be applicable in all the industries in our society today.
From observation, during a 8 to 5 job, employees tends to adopt a slower working pace for the last 1-2 hours of work. This might be due to a combination of exhaustion of attention span or accumulation of fatigue from previous day work or other possible factors. Most of them will be waiting and longing for 5 o'clock to arrive and to catch the earliest possible bus/train home to see their loved ones or to catch some rest. Productivity is therefore low during the last hour.
This last hour can be better spent for the employee to gain enough rest so that having better attention span and drive to work better the next day.

2) Singaporeans can spend more time with their family (Social factor)
Long working hours are depriving Singaporean from spending enough time with their family and friends. This might be the cause of problems like weaker family bonds, lower procreation rate, higher teenage crimes etc etc. All these problem can be improved if Singaporeans are able to spend more time with the family. This will also work in parallel with the government's policy of encouraging newborn babies and family cohesiveness.

3) Improve company's competitiveness
If company are worried that productivity will be lowered or deadline will not be met due to compromisation of working hours. Worry not. Company has to believe that employees are part of the company. Motivated employees will be more than willing to work overtime for their employer to finish up a project assigned to them.
With better welfare given to them, employees' morale and drive will be higher at work and thus more willing and more able to contribute to the company.
This also helps lower employee turnover rate which many company are facing now, with better welfare, employees will be more likely to stay with the company. This new employee retention strategy will definitely bring advantages to the company directly or indirectly as highly skilled employees are great assets to company.

Criteria:
1) This scheme should not be implemented with lowered salary else it will bring more harm to the company. As monetary rewards is the most basic motivation of employees, it will directly and negatively affect the morale of employees. This might even leads to complaints and unproductive employees. Therefore if the "stop at 7" scheme were to be implemented, a salary cut will be a big NO-NO.. In fact, as long as the productivity of the company remain the same or improved after the new scheme, a salary cut is not justifiable.

2) This scheme will not work for some industries. Mainly the operation and manufacturing industry. As these sectors' revenue are directly proportional to the working hours or operating hours, a compromisation will means lowered revenue even though it will bring about more motivated workers. If a factory produce 14 units of goods per hour, an hour lesser of operation hour will cost the factory revenue from 14 units of goods. On another hand, if a restaurant operates one lesser hour, the revenue will be sure to be lesser. Therefore even if this scheme is implemented for these company, it might not benefit them as much.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, I personally think that this is a win-win situation, not only for the employee and the company, but also for the employees' family, for the government, for Singapore and the future of Singapore.

Disclaimer:
The above are just illustrations in my personal opinion with no fact and figures to support the claims and prediction at the time of writing. I do not hold any responsibility if this scheme does not work as predicted as more research and analysis are needed to find out the effectiveness of this scheme.

With all those said, I personally think that this is definitely feasible. I will be adding more support and figures, if possible at a later time. Comments are welcomed.
